What's In Bloom?

May 31, 2003 - Planting A Rose

I'm often asked how to plant roses. I've written it up a few times and I decided to illustrate it. Here is my first draft. I need a few more pictures to fill it out. I'll add them as I take them.

If the local soil is poor (ours is heavy clay), you'll need some good soil and composted manure to ammend the soil with. If you have your own compost (good for you), that's ideal, otherwise, buy it bagged or in bulk. You'll also want mulch to help the soil retain moisture and to reduce the weeds.

Select a location with at least six hours of direct sun. A few roses can stand less but they will all be happiest and healthiest with six or more hours.

Fill the hole the rest of the way with the heavy clay, mixing it well with the good soil and compost. You won't be able to get it all back in. It's okay to pile it up some above the level of the surrounding area.
