DotRose.Com News

November 22, 2004

Added an archive of old old DotRose.com Main Pages. So far, it's just those since the redesign. I plan to add the really old versions, too. I've also moved the Skin the Site page to a new location (in the News section).

November 2004

Lots of changes since the last news item was posted. I've added a public photo gallery that lets you see any non-protected photo gallery. There is a new collection of audio and video that's still in progress of being created. UPDATE: This public gallery has been removed.

Updated Uncle Gator's Math Facts page with some multiplications problems. It has 60 of them (the 0s, 1s, 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s).

The fifth skin for the site is now in place. There may be some tweeks over the next few days but it's basically working. This one features Dorothy riding the swing ride at Hershey Park and has a blue background. Select this skin or look at thumbnails of all the skins.

Created Uncle Gator's Math Facts page. This lets Dorothy and her classmates (and anyone else, for that matter) practice their addition and subtraction tables.

Added a What's In Bloom section to the web site. This has up to date pictures of things blooming in the yard. I plan to update it every week or two, at least during the spring.

On the menus, I've grouped all the private areas under one heading. So now you click on the Private link and you will be asked to log in. Once you've done that, you will get the private menu, which includes all the private pieces.

I've now taken the HTML out of the menu.php files. They now contain "raw" menu data. The first thing on each line is a word describing the data on that line. Then, there is one or more tab-delimited fields of data. Each "skin" now can have a different menu layout, using the same data. There are currently three different "line types:" LINK (the actual menu links, consisting of href values and the text that is to be displayed as the link); SUBHEAD (subheadings that should just be displayed but that are not links); MENU (a call to a menu further up in the site structure); and GRAY (an inactive link). These files are read by a function that is included in the header for all pages. For now, this function is the same for all the skins but now I can easily make it different for any or all of them, changing the layout for the menu with the skin.

One more step in the conversion from HTML and Perl to PHP was completed today as I rolled out the PHP version of the Image gallery application. Not only does it retain the style of the rest of the site and wears the selected skin, it also has a few imprevements. Most important is that above the thumbnails are [Prev] and [Next] buttons. These will step you through a gallery one photo at a time, going to the next page of thumbnails as necessary.

I've just completed the fourth skin for the site. Click here to select this newest skin, or Click here to see thumbnails of the different skins.

I've just finished rebuilding the site using PHP files instead of plain HTML files. This works better than using server side includes because it give the flexibility to use variables, etc. Anyway, I'm now in the process of converting my scripted pieces from Perl to PHP.

Concurrently, I'm working on a few new layouts (or "skins") for the site. These skins include different color schemes and different main "Dorothy" pictures. So, feel free to skin the site. I'll be adding ore skins as time goes on.
