What's In Bloom?

National Bonsai and Penjing Museum
May 24, 2003

The National Bonsai Museum was opened in 1976 after the United States received a large collection of bonsai from Japan in honor of the 200th anniversary of our national independence. Over the years it has been expanded to contain bonsai and penjing (Chinese landscape bonsai) from around the world. The oldest tree in the collection is a Japanese White Pine that has been in training since 1625.

Entrance to the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum is through a grove of Cryptomeria japonica with perennials growing in the deep shade under them. The Japanese, Chinese, and American exhibits are in separate pavilions with landscaping between. There are also special exhibits from time to time, such as the Satsuki Azaleas shown below.

Continue to the The Administrative Building, jump ahead to the National Capitol Columns or return to the National Herb Garden or the Rose Garden.
