Above is a "color selection" window (on the left) and a series of different colored words (on the right). Each selection in the window and each word on the right is the code which defines the color it represents. Scroll this page so as much of the colored text as possible is visible and click on different colors in the selection box. As you do so, the background under the colored words will change. You can then decide what combinations of text and background colors look good to you.

In html, a color is defined using either a name or three, two-digit hex numbers from 00 to ff. These three numbers represent the value of Red, Green and Blue respectively. The code 000000 represents black, ff0000 represents bright red, etc. On this page, there are only 216 colors. The only hex numbers used in the color values are 00, 33, 66, 99, cc, and ff, producing 6^3 (or 216) color combinations. These 216 colors make up the Netscape Color Cube and will all be displayed as distinct, solid colors on monitors which display 256 colors. While you can use the color values between those used here, only monitors which display more than 256 colors will be able to display them as distinct, solid colors. Of course, that's not the problem it once was.
